21 | ![]() | George Cosstick - Cricket Article - The Maitland Mercury 28 Nov 1896 Page 15 [BY THE VAGRANT.]. (1896, November 28). The Maitland Weekly Mercury (NSW : 1894 - 1931), p. 15. Retrieved August 3, 2014, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article126321613 The following article: George Cosstick, son of the dead and gone veteran Sam, was responsible for a somewhat sensational performance at Largs on Saturday. Playing for Lochinvar against Largs, Cosstick hit up 202 out of a total of 293 for nine wickets, and then had the satisfaction of being not out, but the notable thing about the feat is that the runs were scored in an hour and fifty minutes, so that George could have wasted but little time. He is a vigorous hitter, without an attractive style, and he can also bowl a bit.

25 | ![]() | Harriet Newman Stabbing STABBING AT MAITLAND (14 September 1860) — Harriet Newman was indicted for having, on the 8th May, feloniously and unlawfully stabbed Phineas Newman, with intent to kill and murder the said Phineas Newman. The prisoner was undefended. The Attorney-General opened the case, and called constable Edward Maclean and Phineas Newman. From the evidence of Newman it appeared that on the day named he had been hard at work mowing, and on leaving work got into company and went home drunk. A quarrel ensued between himself and wife about cutting some bread and butter for the child, and he believed he struck her several times ; about a quarter of an hour after she put her hand to his heart and found blood trickling down; but how it occurred he did not know. He then went to a neighbour's (his daughter's) house, but they were (as he said) stupid, and could not stop the blood. Constable Maclean afterwards took him to the hospital. His wife has not guilty of raising a knife against him. They had been married twenty two years, and she was the mother of twelve children. George Mullins, surgeon to the Maitland Hospital, deposed to examining the wound on Newman's head; it was a scalp wound, an inch and an a-half long, on the right side, and it had bled very much; Newman had been drinking; such a wound could not have been produced by his running against a knife. This closed the case for the Crown. Prisoner. In her defence, said she never took the knife to hurt her husband; he came home intoxicated and began beating her; she had a knife in her hand and raised it to protect herself, and her husband accidentally came in contact with it. The Judge summed up, and the jury retired, and in a few minutes returned with a verdict of not guilty. The prisoner was then discharged

We strive to document all of our sources in this family tree. However, there is a lot of guesswork and uncertainty in genealogy; false stories, transcription errors, enumeration mistakes.
While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information shared, errors may still happen. If you have something to add, be it a correction or addition, please let us know.
